为无机高分子化合物，是介于氯化铝和氢氧化铝之间的产物，通过羟基而架桥聚合，分子中带有数量不等的羟基。无色或黄色树脂状固体。其溶液为无色或黄褐色透明液体，有时因含杂质而呈灰黑色黏液。液体产品中氧化铝含量为8％以上，固体产品中氧化铝含量为20％～40％。有较强的架桥吸附性能，易溶于水，水解过程中伴随有电化学、凝聚、吸附和沉淀等物理化学过程。有腐蚀性。
