钡铬黄有两种，一种是铬酸钡[CaCrO4]，另一种是铬酸钡钾，是铬酸钡与铬酸钾的复合盐，化学式为BaK2(CrO4)2或BaCrO4・K2CrO4。铬酸钡是一种奶黄色的粉末，溶于盐酸和硝酸，着色力极低。铬酸钡的国际标准代号为ISO-2068-1972，要求氧化钡含量不低于56%，三氧化铬含量不低于36.5%。铬酸钡钾是柠檬黄色粉末，由于含有铬酸钾成分，有一定的水溶性，相对密度为3.65，折射率1.9，吸油量11.6%，视比容为300g/L。

用于生产安全火柴、陶器、玻璃颜料等不能用作着色颜料，因含有铬酸根，所以用于防锈漆中有类似于锌铬黄的作用。铬酸钡钾也不能作着色颜料，只能作为防锈颜料，可替代部分锌黄。从发展趋势看，它仅是涂料行业可供选用的铬酸盐防锈颜料的品种之一。
