六方晶系或无定形深绿色粉末。有金属光泽。立方晶系或无定型绿色粉末。通常有两种色相：浅橄榄绿色和深橄榄绿色。有金属色泽。相对密度5.21。熔点2266℃。沸点4000℃。有极优良的耐热性，可耐温1000℃而不变色，耐酸、耐碱性也极佳。不溶于水，难溶于酸，可溶于热的碱金属溴酸盐溶液中。对光、大气及二氧化硫和硫化氢等腐蚀性气体均极稳定。有很高的遮盖力，但着色力比不过酞菁绿，色调不够鲜亮，粒度较硬，制漆光泽度稍差。具有磁性。有毒。

主要应用于特种钢冶炼出钢口、滑板口及大型焚烧炉可用于陶瓷和搪瓷的着色，橡胶着色，配制耐高温涂料，美术用颜料，供配制印刷纸币及有价证券的油墨。氧化铬绿的色泽近似于植物的叶绿素，可用于伪装漆，能使红外摄影时难以分辨。也大量用于冶金，制作耐火材料，研磨粉。还可用作有机合成催化剂，是高级绿色颜料。
